I like using sacred sage smoke to visualize my rythm and movement. I am doing alot of work with the PRESERVATION OF NATIVE CULTURE from OSCODA with decorative clothing . Very well done site -- thank you for not only addressing the issues of American Indian peoples, but also for those of us who are non-Indian Americans . I was looking for a nearby powwow -- we have not been to one in 18 years. I know there is an annual powwow in Daniel's Park, but it appears no tribes from Colorado have added to your site. Our oldest daughter has her fiance's 2 little girls and his parents from England, visiting. When I suggested a powwow, our daughter said she had also thought her guests would find it interesting to experience that part of America's history. She asked me to help her find if any tribes will be doing it nearby. Today is Aug 14, and her guests will be leaving in about 1 week -- if you can help me on this --- tribes very near to Boulder or Denver Colorado, soon holding powwows-- I would GREATLY appreciate it. I haven't really had the time, since I just visited your site, to read, but it appears that you are kind and inviiting to nonIndians. I appreciate that, as current generations of other Americans are not responsible for the deeds of past generations. In fact, I sent your site to some of our children, we have friends of many cultures, including some American Indians. Growing up in my generation, it was easy to believe that most Indians had been fairly dealt with and were either ignorant or vindictive peoples. As the years have gone by, thankfully, I have realized that it simply is not true; and that ALL peoples of the world, have been wronged by some other peoples, throughout history. Leaders over the millenia have craftily tricked the common people into believeing that some other peoples were "enemies", in order to get the commoners to war on other, usually innocent, peoples for their own greed. I teach our children, that it is not the peoples who are the enemies, rather, it is a very small percentage of greedy ruling peoples who are the ones who create the problems and deceive their peoples into events against other peoples. It hurts me when other cultures try to categorize ME, just because I am caucasion of European decent, so I feel that at least to an extent, I understand other peoples hurts or disappointments when they are judged by THEIR familial lines. Growing up in America, I also thought that many Indian beliefs, rituals, medicines, etc were superstitious, mostly, in nature. I have over the years also, come to realize that in fact, science substantiate much of what Indians believe. I have already taken too much of your time, but I feel that the typical American culture has kept much truth from all of us, and am grateful that through various sources, I have come to understand that. Again, though I have not had the time to read your site yet, it appears to be VERY informational and very "user-friendly". Everyone likes to hear about a job well done, so I wanted to mention it to you. And again, if you can be of assistance to me on finding a nearby powwow this week, I would apperciate it. Thank you for your time !

We attended the Kainai Pow wow at Standoff, Alberta and had a wonderful, enjoyable time. It was fabulous to see the various regalia of the dancers, and the drumming was wonderful. We thank the native populations so very much for sharing with us. We are raising 2 wonderful native children and it was so nice to be able to show them some native culture. Meegwitch

They had one child and was with child again when they left and move to Ky, where my father was borned. We recently had our First Traditional Pow Wow at Pine Creek First Nation on July 15,16,17. It was a great success, elders from our surrounding communities really enjoyed watching the dancers, drummers etc. We attended a Traditional Pow Wow on July 23 & 24 in Rolling River First Nation and that was a great success also. It's really great to attend these Pow Wows that are held on weekends because many people work and that's the only time they get to go out on their own. We are just beginning to learn about the the Pow Wow and people have been excellent in providing information, there's is so much to learn, and our biggest task is to have our Youth interested in. The younger children will be easy. Megwetch to all the elders from other First Nations who are supporting and guiding us!

I have many different tribes in me but we can't prove it as nobody has all the info since the elders died. I had a dream that I wish someone could explain. I was in a white buckskin dress that had feathers inbetween the fringes on the sleeves and about knee length of the dress. I heard a voice talking to me in the dream saying I must wear this dress. The feathers were white with the censored red. The voice said that the white feathers meant peace and the red the blood of all native Americans that was shed for the peace. On the center of the top was bead work , it had a sun with a dove flying to the sun with a white feather with the red tip in it's beak. I had a head dress on that had layers and layers of these white and red feathers. The voice told me that I must get a feather (white with a red tip) from all Native Americans that want to be represented in this dress.On the bottom edge of the dress it had fringes. 2 inches above the bottom of the dress it had beadwork of different symboles of peace, love, brotherhood, friendship of all tribes. I was dancing in a circle in this dress and I looked like a dove in flight. My Native American name is White Dove given to me by a Sioux Chief. If anyone knows what this dream means pleaselet me know. Also I do want to make this dress but don't know how to start. If you know how to make it or have any feather white with a red censored you want to send me I'll make sure it gets on the dress and headdress as soon as i figure out how to make it. Thank You

The Indian blood must run strong in me despite the %of it because even as a little girl, I loved rhythm and dance and I had prophetic dreams-it is easy for me to understand nd be emphathetic and symphathetic with how the white man tried their best to destroy all Indiam culture- I am most sorry for the servations who do not hae a way of making money for themselves and who lives such hard nd poor lives like the Sioux and those other in S. Dakota and Montana, and the Navaho, Lakota and Apapche, etc. in the Mid-west and West who go for want of fod, education, blankets and coal or gas for heat in winter and alck of water in some of the northern tribes. I give to several charities that address these-my dream is one day to go directly to any of these eservations that would have me and help in any way I can- I am a teacher and I'm physically in need of help in my health to be restored and trying to raise up two more children I adopted 8 yrs. ago. I will be several (%) yrs. bebfore I can follow my dream.

I attended a beautiful pow wow at the University of Washington last year for the first time with Girl Scout Troop 2030. I am now writing a paper about a cultural event different from my own and needed some more information. I learned much more today than I expected and the pow wow that we attended was a great learning experience for myself, my daughter and the rest of the Girl Scout Troop.

This is a really cool site. I go to pow-wows in the Dakotas every summer. I have three little ones that dance all year for a 21st Century Drum and Dance group with our school. They are invited all over to perform even at state events. It is a good way to teach them their heritage and keep the cultural going. They are also taught in the school the language. So find out about your family tree and keep the heritage going. Thank you

Can you give Me the times and addresses of Pow-wow in Virginia. I went to one in Charlotesville Va. a few years back, but was very disapointed in it. Few people were there and it was more like a flea market. Only 2 or 3 Native American venders were there, all they had was a little bit of jewelry, poorly made. I have really enjoyed your site. Originally from Michigan, there are several reservations up there. We have always attended the powwows in michgan and wanted to continue now that we moved down here. This site is a great link for those that are newly discovering who they are and for those that feel draw to celebrate together.

I have lived in Jacksonville Florida since the age of 12. My grandmother told me that we have lenape blood lines. My grandmother is from Pottsville Pa I was born in Philadelphia pa. I have never been to a powwow. I wish they would come to Jacksonville florida.

Native-Pride Nation Wide!!! Nice site, but I tried to add a few powwow's that go on in the great Northwest. There are so many. I was unable to add info due to the site being unfound. Help!

I have discovered that I am part Yaqui and part Chumash. My father tells me that he used to receive papers from the Yaqui tribe for my grandfather after he passed away but he never kept them. ( my father didnt really believe he was Indian)Now he cant locate any of these papers but he rememebers that there was a number on them. I have contacted the Pascua Yaqui Tribe headquarters with his name and they state they dont have any record of him, and that if we cant locate the number these is no point in persusing the link to my heritage. Is there anything you can recommend? Would a hair DNA test work? What type of test? Anything else?

I was wondering if anybody out there new of a Dineh (Navajo) name of Kiani. I'm not sure if that is the correct spelling. I heard of it about 10 years ago and gave it to my daughter as her second name. I'm afraid I had to guess the spelling out here in Australia. Enjoying your site immensely, particularly the "Pow Wow Etiquette" page. I would suggest that it be updated to include a few more items: 1) I have had many people ask me what they should wear to a pow wow. It seems to confuse many who have never been to one before. 2) Warnings about the unfortunate con artists out there who sometimes prey on pow wows would be helpful; for example, never give money to someone who claims they can teach you "Indian spirituality," and so on. 3) A kind reminder that not all Natives are alike; each Tribe is different, and pow wows in different areas of the country can vary somewhat to reflect the traditions of the local Tribes. Also, we don't all LOOK alike, either, or dress alike. Asking for a "Native American drum" is pretty meaningless, whereas asking about a Sioux drum might get you the answer you're looking for. And finally, 4) Respect the taboos of various Tribes; many do not discuss rituals and spirituality outside of the Tribe. They are not trying to be rude to you by not answering your questions; it is a part of their cultural and religious edicts. Please respect them. All in all, this is a GREAT site, and I look forward to visiting it often...and hopefully seeing many of you at the Spirit of the Bison Pow Wow and the Sky City Pow Wow in September

This could be a great chance for members of the Native American community to promote their culture and way of life. Each episode of the show involves two families from different backgrounds who swap one parent from each household for ten days to experience how other families in different parts of the country run their lives. We are looking for a family in the Native American community who would genuinely like to learn from the experience of having their Mom swapped out...learning from another Mom and another lifestyle/culture, etc...while sharing their culture and lifestyle with another family. WE are an intertribal village both vet and nonvet,we have tribes of many different Nations in our village.the men and woman both dance for the vets who didn't return. we put a pow wow on at a Bison Ranch every year. Our village welcomes anyone that comes in a good way and wishes to become part of our village. We never ask anyone to leave there own village to become a part of ours,belonging to more then one village helps to unite all! We try to follow the Red Road as best as we can. All my life , all I heard was how my Grandfather was ashamed [?] of his heritage. Mainly because of the jobs offered during the depression. So he hid his heritage and became an engineer for the Rock Island Line. I have always been proud of this heritage and have shared it with my children. How do I look into Gov. Grants for education?

He is buried at Tu-Endie-Wei beside the soldiers he once fought & later trued to befriend. If you look for The curse of Cornstslk on the net You will find that he is the Mothman of Pt. Pleasent, WV. & yes he is real Cornstalks dying words were I put a curse on this land for [200] two hundred years, thats why there has been no more sighting since on or about 1978 I am very proud to be Native American {I don`t like being called {Indian} because Columus did not find India, He found us! I was extremely excited when I found out that I was 1/32 Cherokee. Not much but the pride of the Cherokee nation runs high in my blood stream!

I have a peace pipe that is a Charokee clan turtle circa late 1700 early 1800 that a local charokee told me was a musium piece. what do I have? and Who do I talk to about it. Enjoyed your site a lot. Got to meet S. Reevis @ Gen. Butler st. park in Ky. Talked to him for five minutes with his sunglasses on before I realized who he was. That really surprised me when he removed the glasses. I am one of the four Mountain Men of the Annie Tramper Indian Festival of London, Ky. which was moved to Carrollton,Ky this year, and held early, for the dedication of some 85 acres and site of the failed ski lodge there. I am all for the governments whether states or on a national level returning part of this ravished but still great land to the people that deserve it, as it is no secret they will treasure it more than a large (very large) percentage of white men would. Incidently, I am white, from Colorado originally, and related through generations to Gen.(Colonel) G. A. Custer. Proven through my geneology, though I am proud of my heritage, I can not say that I am proud of the atrocious acts of the U. S. government toward all of the native people of this country. It cannot be put into words the way that I personally feel about what should be, or should have been done. Had it been done, I firmly believe that I would not be here to speak my piece on the matter. No matter how disgusted, revolted, or appalled anyone is by the degradation and near complete elimination of the true people of the americas, The change cannot be made post-hand. The word "if" can only conjure fantasies of what should, or could have been. As for myself, my part is to raise buffalo, though I am no Ted Turner, my heart is right. I do what ever is possible to elevate the "red man" (my brother) at all points in my life. In my actions and my conversations and all that I do 24/7.I have felt mildly like this all my life, but when I lost an eleven year old son to cancer the transformation began in me very strong. I divorced and started going to pow-wows and festivals whenever there was one within my "reach". I am a railroader and stay busy working overtime. I am not trying to "pull my chain". I am really noone, just me. But, I can not accept these atrocities withsilent grace. It's more a feeling of silent rage. One person cannot change these things, However, one man can make a very small dent in the reversal of them. Things happen for a reason decided on the shoulder of the great spirits,. which we all must accept. Dignity is not cheap. I believe that perseverance somehow will pay a sweet dividend after time though in the tradition of the white man, I cannot say when. Living to see that day will be gloriously refreshing. The very reason the "red" is in my indian name is because of the legend of "the White Buffalo". Just as you cannot get to the other side of the room without taking those necessary steps to get there, I feel there must be a "Red Buffalo" in order to reach the point where a "White Buffalo" enters the world, stage, arena, or picture, whatever you or others preferto lookon it as. I most certainly would not exalt myself to any position, so please do not interpret that in my meaning. I am also called "Magnum Force". Nearly all my white friends know me by that nickname. The joke is that I got the nickname because I am so good looking like Tom Selleck, Ha, Ha. The last name of Force may have played a tiny roll in it in reality. I like to joke with my friends and have a good time. I am free of the abuse of drugs and alcohol. I do have spirits on my premises but, a monk in a monastery would drink more than I do. Hope that I haven't put anyone except myself to sleep with this chatter. It feels great to tell other people how I feel about how I feel. I just wish I could come up with money enough to get a Buffalo herd started. Most kikely to you all it sounds crazy for a white man to care so much for the native people but I really want to start a buffalo herd to help return the Buffalo and his spirit to the land of "FREEDOM". My original intentions were to do this solely for the native american, but, I found out about the goodness of buffalo meat as opposed to any other meat on the face of this planet and found out that it is best "bar none" than anything. Elk is good but not as good statistically as Bison(Buffalo). My financier told me to go for profit whether I make any thing or not. I want a 2000 head herd eventually, and when a needy native american comes to me I would give him an animal with one catch. that being that he harvest the animal in the ways of the ancestors and use the whole animal, hide, bones, head, hooves, and everything, right down to almost using the grunt if possible. This tradition along with a lot of others are being lost. My dream is to see the Buffalo return to the prairie and the native american see the coming about of the vision originally called the "Ghost Dance". That is about it in a nutshell. One small part is all this man can do and I am having a real tough time getting started. I am committed completely to this endeavor. The end result will be a treasure I am certain. The friendships that I have gained already are gratifying. In order to make it to the Lake Reba pow-wow/festival tommorrow in Richmond, Ky. I must retire for the night. I recently got married to a Mexican man whom i've been with for 4 years and i have moved to Mexico. i would like some information about the Fort Duchesne pow-wow 2004 who won in all the contests as i was unable to return to the festivities. American by name Indian by Blood. I have Cherokee on my moms side and Apachee on my Dads side. Not sure how far on my moms side but my great great grandma was full blooded Apachee. Went to my first Pow Wow in northern Ohio this past weekened. It was awesome would like to know where more are bring held around Cincinnati and Southern Ohio Thanks.

I am a fancy shawl dancer. I just started dancing last year. My outfit has been improved majorly. My father said he'd find someone to help us with designs and techniques but it's been over a year (I started last spring)and I've been making my own outfit. The design is a diamond with a horse on top of it, the colors are orange and blue. My dancing isn't the greatest. My father is working with International Nations so he's become over busy and has had me miss out on Pow Wows I was excited to go to! Can anway give me a hand with my problem? It would be nice to hear from you

I am part Cherokee and part Chippewa. I have researched my family tree and found that I have a grandmother named Barbara Ann Griffith of whom I have a painting of. I know that her father's name is Sebastian and she married Micheal Daly. I am trying to find her indian name though. I also am looking for any pow-wows in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Charlotte's kids: Swan Union Burnett b. 1834 Swan traveled many year's between Arkansas and Alabama to teach English to Cherokee children. Anyone having any info would be greatly appreciated.
